We should be talking about our history all the time, but I love the special feeling of Black History Month, sharing and unifying with pride about the stories and strides of Black people in America.
Without in-person gatherings, I must say I’m missing some of the events I used to look forward to, including the singing of Lift Every Voice and Sing at church almost every Sunday this month.
Looking for ways to celebrate BHM? Here are some simple ways I’m incorporating sprinkles of Black history into my month and beyond.
Read a book about a prominent Black trailblazer
I’m about to start Cicely Tyson’s new autobiography, Just as I Am. RIP Queen.
Read books with your children
The Little Leaders series is still one of favorites to read with my daughter at night.
Attend a virtual event
Many local museums are hosting virtual book readings, film screenings and events for kids for BHM. I love that the National Museum of African American History & Culture always has a variety of events for learners of all ages. Right now I’m loving their Joyful Fridays series for kids every Friday at 11am EST. This week they are featuring Joyful Fridays: Hats, Hair and Headwear, crafting hats inspired by Mae Reeves and talking about how people express themselves through hair styles and headwear in a webinar-style Zoom class.
