I love a fancy, beautiful gourmet cake. Over the last few years, there have been several reasons to call my favorite baker, 5-12 Dessert, to create decorative masterpieces for baby showers, birthday celebrations and my own anniversary party for two.
I’ve seen a Pinterest video or two of bakers transforming store bought cakes into sophisticated (expensive-looking) designed cakes that can rival your favorite bakery’s creations.
I couldn’t help but to give it a try! I must say it was a fun little project that was relatively easy to do if you have a bit of patience. I’m not ready to let go of my go-to bakery just yet, but it’s definitely a baking hack that I’d try again.
How did I do?
BEFORE – basic cake from Giant grocery story
Step 1: Take a butter knife to lift off the flowers and edges off of the cake, separate by color. Put each color of icing in separate bowls.
Step 2: Mix the icing in each bowl by color. Spot dots of each color on the cake.
Step 3: Take a flat spatula or knife and smooth the icing including the dots around each side of the cake and the top.
Add flowers, cake markers or whatever accoutrements you want to add to personalize and decorate your cake to the theme of your choosing.
Viola! You have a cake transformed! Enjoy and take all of the credit for creating such a beautiful masterpiece at home within minutes.
