We are officially knee-deep into fall, ya’ll. Even with a few warm days here and there, it’s that perfect time of year when the humidity has escaped and there’s a slight chill in the air, but not enough to deter any outdoor activities yet. I’m enjoying breaking out a cardigan over a t-shirt, and putting on real shoes other than flip flops every now and then.
The seasons change fast, so these next few weeks are special. We need to take advantage of this transitional period before it all turns into brisk temps, shorter days and snow flurries in the air.
Looking for ways to enjoy the fall weather? Here are a few of my favorite things to do and places to visit during this time of year.
Wineries
Visiting a winery or vineyard is always a good idea, but it’s most enjoyable right now. Summertime is fun, but to be honest, sitting out in the beating sun and humidity while day drinking for hours is a good way to get a headache and feel drained by sunset. September/October is peeeeerfect. You still have plenty of sunny days, but it’s much more comfortable and less crowded with fewer large parties to navigate around (bachelorette gatherings are for the summer LOL). And if you go later in the fall, many will serve mulled wine, which is just the most soothing way to sip wine in the winter.
Pumpkin Patches
What screams fall more than the opening of pumpkin patches? I love seeing all the kids (and adults) get excited for Halloween, picking out pumpkins and enjoying all of the festival activities. The larger pumpkin patches are like full-on fall carnivals with corn mazes, hayrides and petting zoos. I love warm apple cider and always leave with a jug to enjoy for a month. I miss the summer when it leaves us each year, but pumpkin patches help me ease into fall with joy.
Washington DC-specific: National Arboretum
The National Arboretum is really a hidden gem in DC. Once you’re in the park, it’s hard to believe you are still in DC, in northeast DC no less! This beautiful display of nature features a variety of garden trails, historical sculptures and statues, and plenty of spaces to sit or lay a blanket for small or large gatherings with friends. It’s a peaceful place, that is very easy on the eyes. I wish I had found the Arboretum earlier in life when I had time to spend a Saturday afternoon reading a book on a blanket with a coffee mug full of wine. This place makes you feel like you escaped the busyness of the city while still being in the heart of it.
