I’ve been hearing a lot about the physical and emotional benefits of aromatherapy (or essential oil therapy) for awhile now, but never gave it a second thought until COVID-19 hit and I’ve been working from home every day. I actually love working from home, but I do miss the daily change of scenery a bit. My reason to buy an essential oil diffuser was simply to try to make my workspace (ahem, my bedroom) feel different from day to day. The energy that a eucalyptus oil can inspire is very different from the calming vibes you get from a lavender scent. So I feel that I’m able to have a different experience in the room similar to how I’d feel if I actually changed my location. It works for me. And it ended up being an easy way to lift my mood, giving me more energy when I was dragging through the day or helping me stay calm during stressful moments.
I have a starter pack of popular essential oils and was surprised to learn that the scents that I loved could also help address other physical needs as well.
- Peppermint can to help alleviate headaches, which have been a problem for me from time to time.
- Lavender is well-known for inducing relaxation, making it easier for this occasional insomniac to get a good night’s rest.
- Orange has numerous skin benefits, and as a long-time daily vitamin C serum user, I’m sold on anything that can support brighter, clearer skin. It also helps calm feelings of anxiety, which in these times, could be useful to anyone.
These are my go-to scents right now, but there are hundreds of essential oils that have a special set of healing properties to help:
- manage pain
- improve sleep quality
- reduce stress, agitation, and anxiety
- soothe sore joints
- treat headaches and migraines
- fight bacteria, virus, or fungus
- improve digestion
- boost immunity
